SYNOPSIS
Ganesh is a farmer who lives in a secluded village in Goa. He does his daily farm chores and is content with his life. One day, the owner of the farm, Dattaraj, visits Ganesh and informs him that he has sold the farmland to a builder. Dattaraj needs the money to pay for his brother’s medical treatment. Despite Ganesh’s attempts to persuade Dattaraj not to sell the farm, it’s already too late. The next day, while spraying pesticide on the paddy, he tries to call his wife but his brother-inlaw answers the phone and gets angry with him for calling repeatedly. That night, Ganesh is frustrated and repeatedly hits his head against a metal sheet. He goes to his brother Raghu’s house in another village where some guests are discussing a marriage proposal for their daughter. Ganesh abruptly enters the house, which angers Raghu. They argue and Raghu physically attacks Ganesh. The other guests feel ashamed and leave the house. Raghu pushes Ganesh out of the house and slams the door shut. The following day, Ganesh lies motionless in a stream of water, in despair. He consumes the contents of the pesticide bottle and collapses in the paddy field later in the day. Later that night, Dattaraj sees Raghu walking with a torch and asks him about Ganesh. Raghu explains what had happened between him and Ganesh. They both go to search for Ganesh.
DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT
The seed of this story was inspired by a question: “What do we live for when we feel like we don’t have a purpose anymore?” A sudden change in a routine or an unexpected loss of something personal can throw us off balance, creating a void that we don’t know how to fill. We try to grab onto anything we can, which often feels like drowning in our own mental turmoil. In times like these, we all want to be heard, but people often listen only to reply, not to understand. This film aims to explore our dependence on intangible aspects of our lives, such as “purpose”, and the extent to which we exploit our well-being because of it, whether directly or indirectly. The story follows a caretaker of a farm and his struggle with daily life after he realizes the farm will soon be sold. The land is bought by a builder to construct a building. The film also highlights. The problems of urbanization and the destruction of rural livelihoods. The film sheds light on how lands are destroyed to build concrete structures and how we are shifting towards non sustainable methods of living, a problem that is growing exponentially each day. The fast-moving society often neglects the population working on the grassroots level, a foundational level without which the world wouldn’t function. The film also aims to throw light on the problems faced by people in this strata.
