THE OPEN GESTURE – INTENSIVE PERFORMANCE IN CINEMA: WORKSHOPS WITH ANUP SINGH

Hands-on learning experience with TIFF winner and internationally acclaimed filmmaker, Anup Singh.

These workshops will introduce us to one of the most difficult yet luminous aspects of performance in cinema – the Open Gesture.

As we know, acting is always within the confines of an established space and time. But here, we will study the vision and techniques necessary to inflame these elements with the body’s full untapped resources.

We will learn methods to create a rousing performance, fiery with intensive emotion and rhythmical surprises that open the performance into emotional possibilities rarely seen.

These workshops, held over three days with three hours each day, will comprise of the following elements:

1. An introduction to the Open Gesture.

2. A study of some of the most transformative performances in the history of cinema.

3. Develop through rehearsal (with camera) the various approaches and techniques that help to create life-transfiguring performances.

We seek 15 passionate and committed participants.

ABOUT ANUP SINGH

Anup Singh is an internationally renowned writer, film director and teacher of cinema whose feature “Qissa – The Tale of a Lonely Ghost” (2013), starring Irrfan Khan, premiered at TIFF, where it won the award for “Best Asian Film” (NETPAC). One of the most critically acclaimed films of our times, it has won 15 international awards to date. His next masterpiece, “The Song of Scorpions” (2017), starring Irrfan Khan and Golshifteh Farahani had its world premiere at Locarno Film Festival in front of 8000 people on the world’s largest film screen. The film has won numerous accolades worldwide. His first feature, “The Name of a River” (2001) was awarded the Aravindan Award for best debut filmmaker in India. Currently he is working on his next feature film “Lasya – The Gentle Dance”, an Indo-Swiss co-production, and a French language Swiss-French-Senegalese feature film titled, ‘A Powerful Woman’, based on Marie N’Diaye’s Goncourt award-winning novel, ‘Trois Femmes Puissantes’.

Anup Singh was born in Dar-Es-Salaam, Tanzania, East Africa. He studied Literature and Philosophy at Bombay University and Film at the Film & TV Institute of India, from which he graduated in direction in 1986. He now lives & works in Geneva, Switzerland. Anup Singh has taught and lectured on cinema at numerous universities and film schools in the UK, India and Switzerland. He has also written and directed numerous TV projects and consulted for BBC.

Divya has been a practising entertainment lawyer since 2014. She has also executive produced various productions, and accordingly, her legal advice to her entertainment clients is informed by industry knowledge, business strategy and pragmatism. Prior to joining Wildeboer Dellelce, Divya practised at a prominent entertainment boutique firm and a full-service national firm. Divya is bilingual and practices law in English and French. Divya is particularly passionate about promoting diversity and inclusion in the entertainment industry and over the years has sat on various boards and advisory committees in order to make a real difference.
