SYNOPSIS
The protagonist of this story is Deepa, who belongs to a wealthy joint family of Kolkata. Deepa’s childhood and youth has been scarred with the dark and evil ambience of the household. Deepa’s father, who was alcoholic like most other male members of the family, used to torture her mother. Apart from alcohol, he had other vices including womanizing which was affecting the relationships. Then there was Deepa’s uncle, a pervert who took every opportunity to touch Deepa in inappropriate fashion. Mandira, the nurse taking care of Deepa’s grandfather, was the only solace for Deepa. Unfortunately, this relationship, too, took physical turns. Regular violence at home with continuous sexual perversions deeply impacted Deepa, making her vulnerable.
Things took a drastic turn, when one night Deepa’s mother succumbed to the torture of her father. Deepa’s father refused to look after Deepa any further. This was a blessing in disguise for Deepa, as Deepa’s maternal uncle, a good man by heart came forward and decided to take care of Deepa. Deepa shifts to Giridhi with her Mama (maternal uncle) and Mami (her aunt, Mama’s wife). Life took a 360˚ turn for Deepa. For her, this was a transition from hell to heaven. Affectionate Mama and Mami, picturesque mountains, lush green environment, and serene atmosphere welcomed Deepa to her new life. However, the scars from her old life still haunts Deepa. The sexual nightmares, cravings, vulnerable past, etc. hold her back from relishing the new life. Deepa shares her past with her Mama, whom she idolizes. Mama also found Deepa as a woman of power. They started to relate intellectually, culturally and their closeness increases in a pure way. The affection transformed to platonic love where nobody dared to express due to the guilt. To overcome the guilt, Mama’s love towards his wife increased. Mama wants Deepa to marry Rangan, a nice gentleman. However, the infatuation and attraction towards her Mama resists Deepa to welcome any other male in her life. In the turns of events, Mami was detected with cancer and passed away even after great efforts by Mama to save her. Mama finally decided to leave Giridhi and made Deepa promise to get married with Rangan. Mama left for good.
Deepa and Rangan started a hectic city life with full of competition and had a baby boy. However, Deepa did not find solace as a mother as well. Their child died due to suffocation when they were on the way to visit the doctor. Deepa left the city and the materialistic world and finally found her Mama in a mountain. She wanted her Mama to be back in her life as a friend, philosopher and guide but Mama refuses. Deepa obliges and started living in the other side of the mountain. Now she has found solace in her life. Though they are physically distant, Mama and Deepa are living together intellectually and spiritually while communicating through nature, like clouds, air and sound of rain.
DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT
In the Mist is 100 percent independently made film. The crew had to visit the shooting place 6 times whenever the team had money to shoot so we strategized accordingly and did shoot each season in their own charm and story looked much strong and real. Most of the programmer and curator do not take films seriously that doesn’t come to them from known and strong sources as a result many brilliant films remain unnoticed , I am not saying this film is brilliant but nothing can be said without having a watch. Hope the film will reach where it deserves and we would be looking forward as substantial compromise and sweat involved in making of this melancholy saga of a woman who finally empowered herself through her journey in search of her gender identity and what she went through during this. Thanks and Regards Indrasis.
